Studies show that Americans have become less ambitious at work. Could choosing a career
with a proven pay structure make promotion more appealing? Career.io analyzed the pay
gap between junior-level and senior-level workers around the U.S. to see where ambition
pays off the most.

Sure, you’ve heard of “quiet quitting” and maybe even “quiet ambition” — diligently doing
your job each day with a song in your heart while refusing to “chase achievement for
achievement’s sake,” according to Fortune.

But have you heard of “quietly working your way up to a senior position with more pay and
more inspiring challenges?”

Perhaps not. It hasn’t been so bad to be an entry-level employee lately. Labor shortages
have led to faster wage growth among lower-paid and less-educated workers than the
better-paid and more highly educated. And following the pandemic, some two-thirds of
employees cite their top ambition to be “spending time with my family and friends,” with
“being physically/mentally healthy” a close second, according to one survey.

Still, the wage difference between entry-level and experienced-level workers remains
profound in many regions and industries. To find which jobs, metropolitan areas and states
deliver the greatest rewards to career climbers, we analyzed pay rates across nearly 40,000
U.S. job listings.

Methodology Behind Study

Using figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Modeled Wage Estimates, Career.io
calculated the average increase in hourly pay between ‘entry-level’ and ‘experienced-level’
workers for 39,282 occupation listings across 389 U.S. Metro Areas and every U.S. state.

The team calculated the percentage increase in hourly salary per occupation in each location
before calculating the average increase in hourly salary of all occupations per metropolitan
area and per U.S. state.

Finally, they isolated the occupation in each U.S. state and a selection of U.S. Metro Areas,
which enjoyed the greatest increase (%) in hourly pay from an entry-level role to an
experienced-level role.

The data analysis was completed in April 2024 using the latest available estimate from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics for salaries per occupation by experience level, published in
August 2023.

Construction workers are an important part of every community since they provide services that are essential to the safety, health, and wellbeing of people. But to make everything go smoothly during the building process, a general contractor should be onsite to oversee the quality of work on a construction project. A general contractor is the person who’s responsible for monitoring the day to day activities in the construction site, client negotiations, providing the materials and equipment for the project, and hiring the workers and subcontractors, among others. They also act as the bridge of communication between the project developer and workers. 

General contractors are required to have a degree in engineering, construction management, or construction science. They should also have exceptional leadership, organization, communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and time management skills. Since their work means having to be present at construction sites, being physically fit is a must. Contractors are recommended to live a healthy lifestyle and do regular workouts to prevent work related injuries. They can also advise developers and contractors on the necessary repairs and maintenance, and recommend options to restore buildings with historic significance.

Interior designers are required to have a bachelor’s or associate degree in interior design, but architecture students can also transition into this field. As of this year, it is estimated that interior designers earn around $64,000 annually.

Town Planner

Town planners work with government officials and land developers so that the needs of the community will be met without causing harm to the land and the environment. They’re experts in assessing proposed projects to see if they have the potential to contribute to the growth of the city, and they make suggestions on how to improve these projects. They also do research on the needs of their city, so they’ll be the ones to tell council members if their area needs more parks or playgrounds, commercial buildings, parking spots, or additional green spaces. 

Town planners should have excellent leadership and strategic skills. They should also be creative and have good written and verbal communication skills. Town planners are required to have a degree in urban planning or architecture, as well as a master’s degree in the former. A town planner typically earns around $78,000 per year, but the salary can be influenced by several factors, including location, education, training, and work experience. 

Graduates should consider pursuing a career in construction or architecture to have a future-proof job. As AI (artificial intelligence) advances, it’s natural for students to be concerned over how it may impact job prospects and job security. 23% of workers in the U.S. already have jobs that involve AI in some capacity, Pew Research Center reveals. Yet, rather reassuringly, most workers that use AI a lot to assist with tasks don’t feel threatened by it (for example, 32% of IT workers say AI will help more than hurt them, whereas only 11% say the opposite). Nevertheless, it pays to be prepared and future-proof your career against AI. Job hunting in the most AI-proof states (namely Texas, Arizona, and California) can help you build a sustainable career that’s unlikely to be replaced by robots any time soon. 

California: Fast-Growth Tech Cities

Tech hubs across California like San Francisco, San Jose, and Silicon Valley (the tech capital of the state) are reported to offer strong job security as careers in AI become the new normal. For example, roles in data analysis, machine learning, and cybersecurity are expected to grow by 30% within the next five years. 162,000 jobs are also expected to open in Sacramento within the next decade — that’s a growth rate of 16%. Even better, most of these positions pay at least $50,000. Computer information and research scientists, for example, are in particularly high demand. 220 jobs are expected in this sector by 2030 in Sacramento, up from 150 in 2020, with an average annual salary of $154,259. 

Arizona: Job Growth Expected Across All Sectors

Industries like manufacturing, construction, technology, and healthcare are big in Arizona, which gives the state an edge over others that focus on just one industry alone. When a state hyper-specializes in one industry, jobs are typically more prone to AI replacement. Phoenix has been crowned the most AI-proof city in the U.S for this very reason. It’s home to varied careers and specialized jobs that can’t easily be automated like surgeons and heavy equipment operators. Arizona is therefore one of the states less vulnerable to AI transformation, and is worth relocating to for better job security. 

A new report by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity further predicts solid job growth in all fifteen counties within the state and across all sectors (minus government), so moving here for a sustainable career is a fairly safe bet. “Arizona employment is projected to increase from 3,030,216 jobs in 2020 to 3,751,905 jobs in 2030”, the report reveals. That’s a job growth rate three times higher than the country’s projected growth rate for this period.

Texas: Sustainable Careers in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex

The Lone Star state of Texas can also offer good job security and robot-proof careers. In particular, Dallas-Fort Worth in the northern part of the state had the second-highest number of new job openings (154,000) out of all metroplexes in the country in 2023, second to only New York City. And economists predict these promising numbers will continue into the future. By 2040, Dallas is expected to have 789,752 more job positions, an increase of almost 80%, while Fort Worth will have 390,961 more, an impressive 85% increase. 

Technology, defense and security, and financial services are the biggest industries in Dallas, while manufacturing, oil and gas, aviation, and aerospace are booming in Fort Worth. The metroplex is also a leading area for startups. This means there’ll be more open positions in technology as well.  

AI-proof states can help set you up for a sustainable career. California, Arizona, and Texas are some of the best areas most likely to offer secure jobs that won’t be replaced by robots any time soon.

This means that most young professionals right out of college are accepting jobs for which they are overqualified or that don’t require a four-year degree.
