There have been rumors spreading about a spider called a Joro spider. Joro spiders, also known by their biological name “Trichonephila clavata” first invaded and spotted in Hoschton, Georgia, around 2013 and have been spreading since then across the southeast. They are vivid yellow, blue, and red and can grow 3 inches large with webs nearly 10 feet deep. They’re also completely safe. Joro spiders are native to Japan, but they have also been found in China and Korea. They most likely hitched a ride on cargo containers to the United States. The temperature in much of the United States is comparable to that of Japan, which is one of the reasons why joro spiders could make their way up the East Coast from Georgia. While joro spiders eat (and are likely eaten by) native species, they do not appear to pose a threat to ecosystems or the economy. Because Joros’ eggs can withstand the harsh temperatures of more northern regions, Hoebeke believes the spiders will migrate beyond the Deep South to other parts of the country.

How migration of Joro spiders’ occur?

These spiders can ride on shipping containers, cars, and luggage, but they can also get around on their webs. Joro spiders overwinter as eggs in a silk egg sac made of paper. Spiderlings emerge in Japan in early June and go unseen for the most part. In a method known as ballooning, they fly on a strand of silk. They expand their range by parachuting into new places. It’s how Joro spiders that have just hatched spread. This spread has been noticed tremendously in various parts of the world with significant imaging and proofing.

Are Joro spiders venomous?

There have been arising many questions regarding the venomous properties of Joro spiders. Studies have shown that Joro spiders are technically venomous, but don’t be alarmed unless you’re an insect. According to Axios, they are harmless and their fangs aren’t even big enough to pierce human skin. They will only bite a human or a family pet if they are aggressively restrained. Joro spiders do not pose a hazard, and there is no evidence that they are damaging to the settings in which they have spread. Nonnative invasive species that cause harm are the most problematic, generally due to a lack of predators to keep their populations in check. This appears to be the case with Joro spiders. However, no significant change in the food web or the ecosystem has been noted yet, causing no harm to the environment and its balance.

Recent studies have shown their significant benefits in the fields of agriculture. According to the Associated Press, gardeners were concerned that their webs would harm local spiders and pollinators when they took over north Georgia last year. Joros are likely large enough to take on large pollinators caught in their webs, but those insects may be a minor part of their diet. On the other hand, they could aid native spiders who rely on the Joro’s web for scavenged food. However, there is evidence that they compete with native orb-weaving spiders. Stink bugs, which cause crop damage and swarm in homes, are eaten by these joro spiders assisting in pest management without pesticides. They’re excellent predators. They’ll eat insects like yellow jackets, stink bugs, and mosquitoes that you don’t want around. They also don’t seem to be displacing any local spiders. They might help introduce a better method to protect the crops instead of using insecticides and pesticides.

Joros appears to be a helpful bug as well. Brown marmorated stink bugs, a significant agricultural pest that native spiders won’t eat, are what they’re eating. They are proven effective in protecting the crops and hence enhance yielding. It can act as a natural soldier to the crops protecting them from harmful insects and pests. They might look dangerous in shape and size but can be considered beneficial in various sectors such as agriculture. Researchers are still in line to uncover more of its significance.

For joro spiders, no control techniques have yet been devised. Individual spiders can be manually eliminated if control is wanted, either by hand or by striking them with a stick or other instrument. Before the spiderlings hatch, egg sacs found in the fall and winter can be eliminated. Biocontrol agents have not been researched; however, they are unlikely to be possible due to the risk of affecting related native species. Pesticide control is not advised at this point.

A terminally ill man in the U.S. has become the first person in the world to receive a heart from a genetically modified pig during a transplant.

Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Centre removed the diseased heart from 57-year-old Maryland resident David Bennett and replaced it with the pig’s organ in a transplant that was expressed as Mr Bennett’s last hope of survival. Doctors say the recipient is doing well three days after the seven-hour long procedure.

Despite the initial success of the surgery, it is still unclear what his long-term chances of survival are, however, it signifies a big step forward following the intense research undertaken by scientists on the possible use of animal organs to save lives due to the lack of human organs for transplant.

The operation, scientifically known as xenotransplantation, used a genetically modified pig’s heart to prevent Mr Bennett’s body from rejecting the animal’s organ.

A day before the transplant, Mr Bennett said: “It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice.”

Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center were granted a special dispensation by the US medical regulator to execute the operation, on the basis that Mr Bennett would otherwise have died.

Breakthrough

In a statement released by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, surgeon Bartley Griffiths affirmed that it was “a breakthrough surgery and brings us one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis.”

A scientific advisor at the University, Dr Muhammad Mohiuddin, said: “If this works, there will be an endless supply of these organs for patients who are suffering.”

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), in 2021, there were over 3,800 heart transplants in the U.S., a record high.

A significant breakthrough was made in October 2021, when surgeons in New York announced they had successfully undertaken an operation, transplanting a pig’s kidney into a person. But this was carried out on a person who was brain dead and had no hope of recovery.

On March 9th, David Bennett passed away two month s after the surgery took place. Bennett knew the risks of the surgery and acknowledged that the procedure was “a shot in the dark”. Nevertheless, the surgery is a landmark moment and the results received regarding the cause of his death will tell us how close we are to using modified pigs organs successfully in the future.

The CEO of an online company fired 900 of his employees in a brutal Zoom call before slamming them as “lazy” and claiming that they were “stealing” from customers.

Vishal Garg, the CEO of New York online mortgage lenders, Better.com, dismissed approximately 9 per cent of his employees last Wednesday, only a few weeks before Christmas.

Garg, in a very blunt manor, stated: “This isn’t news that you’re going to want to hear…If you’re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off. Your employment here is terminated effective immediately.”

Prior to letting his workers know of the bad news, Gard said: “I come to you with not great news.

“The market has changed, as you know, and we have to move with it in order to survive so that hopefully, we can continue to thrive and deliver on our mission.

“This isn’t news that you’re going to want to hear.

“But ultimately it was my decision. And I wanted you to hear from me. It’s been a really, really challenging decision to make.”

“This is the second time in my career I’m doing this and I do not want to do this.

“The last time I did it, I cried. This time, I hope to be stronger.

The 43-year-old maintained his authority, blaming the fluctuations within the market even though the company recently received a $750 million cash infusion.

He also cited market efficiency, performance and productivity as key reasons to why the workers were given the boot and mentioned how the workers were unproductive as they were only worker two hours a day. But he stated that all this was necessary for his company to “move in order to survive”.

One of those unlucky 900 who were on the Zoom call recorded the moment they were sacked, which included a large amount of swearing.

In the footage, the worker could be heard saying: “F**k you dude. Are you f**king kidding me?”

Stargaze planets visible to the eye before turkey day

If you can brave the crisp cold of November evenings, step outside sometime between now and Thanksgiving to get some star gazing done and look at some planets. There are five planets that are visible to the naked eye while Thanksgiving star gazing, depending on their positions. These planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Of the five, three are currently visible to the naked eye during a stargazing session, and only at certain times of the day.

Venus

Also called the “Morning Star,” Venus glimmers brightly at the end of the night and just before sunrise. Venus rises four hours before the end of the sun and is located around 30 degrees about the southeast horizon. Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the brightest object in the night sky after the moon. A layer of clouds made of sulfuric acid obscures the surface of the planet, and Venus’ atmospheric pressure is 92 times greater than Earth’s.

Mars

During the later hours of the night and at dawn Mars becomes visible while Thanksgiving stargazing. The Red Planet is decorated by the brighter Jupiter and Venus which hang above it in the sky. It is significantly dimmer than the other two and has a reddish appearance. Mars is a terrestrial planet fourth from the sun with an atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. The largest dust storms in the solar system can be found on The Red Planet.

Jupiter

Also in the period of time at the latter end of the evening and dawn, Jupiter can be found high in the southeast above Venus. Jupiter, the Gas Giant, is two and a half times bigger than all of the other planets in our solar system combined. It is the fifth planet from the sun and has 67 known moons. While Venus still trumps Jupiter’s brightness by far, the Gas Giant comes in as the fourth brightest planet in the system.

Hidden from Sight

Mercury and Saturn won’t reappear until December. Mercury is currently too close to the sun to be visible and will be passing behind the sun on November 17th. Saturn is also too near the sun to be visible and will pass behind it on November 30th. Saturn will be back in the morning sky in late December, while Mercury will be visible in the evening sky.

Forget Your Telescope

Leave your astronomy gear behind when you go out to take a look at Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. All you need is your open eyes and an open mind to appreciate the rather extraordinary view that the night skies have for you during some Thanksgiving stargazing.

Christmas Dinners around the world

With the big day coming up where you will soon be salivating, waiting for your Christmas dinner to be served. we thought we’d make you even hungrier with this list of traditional Christmas dinners around the world. Happy Christmas to you all.

1. Norway

The Norwegians treasure tradition and this is especially true at Christmas. This country celebrates in style on Christmas Eve with roasted pork ribs or belly with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes accompaniments. Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage, just FYI—would you eat this classic Norwegian dish?

2. Poland

The Polish tend to feast on their most important meal of the year on Christmas Eve. This meal is served with fish, with no red meat in sight. The dinner is traditionally known as “Wagilia”.

3. England

Much like Americans, the British love a big roast dinner and are not shy with the trimmings. Turkey is most popular but other meats on the table include gammon and “pigs in blankets”—little sausages wrapped in bacon, in case you didn’t know!

4. Mexico

It might be difficult to imagine Christmas being celebrated in anything other than a snowy environment, but Christmas is a huge deal in Mexico with a huge Christian population. The Mexican Christmas dinner is varied and includes Tamales, Bacalao (salted fish) and Pozole—a hominy soup made with chicken or pork., with the celebration beginning on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve).

5. Italy

Definitely a Christmas dinner for meat lovers, Italian Natale (Christmas) dinner comprises of a huge spread of different meats including braised beef, roasted veal and roasted chicken. The meal starts with an antipasto spread including cured meats and fine cheeses—decadent indeed!

6. Russia

This eastern European country celebrates their Christmas feast grandly by often presenting a stuffed pig’s head as the table’s centerpiece. The meal also includes goose, hare, venison and fish—be sure to wear your loosest jeans for this one.

7. Germany

Christmas, or Weihnachten as they say in Germany, is celebrated with succulent roast goose and roasted carp often served with potatoes, cabbage and Brussel sprouts. Not the bratwurst dish you were expecting, huh?

8. France

The French are widely known for their exquisite tastes and Christmas is no exception. If you’re lucky enough to join a French family over the holidays, expect to see the table laden with dishes such as foie gras, chapon and Bûche de Noël for pudding; a Christmas cake shaped like a log. No, we hadn’t heard of these foods until just now, either!

9. Romania

Christmas dinner in Romania may be one of the most unique meals you might encounter on the big day. The family gather together and feast on roast gammon and pork chops which is also served with a sour soup made up of fermented bran and pork meatballs—delicious?

10. Australia

While we’re mostly used to warming up by the fire on a snowy Christmas day, needless to say, the weather is, shall we say, slightly better down under. Australians will feed on cold food on Christmas day, or, as one might expect, they will celebrate with a barbeque eating fresh seafood’s such as shrimp.

11. Egypt

With Christianity arriving in Egypt around 1AD and making up to 20 percent of the Egyptian population, Christmas is a a big celebration. After a Christmas church service, families eat a special meal called “fatta”, a traditional meat and rice dish. Children are given small amounts of money by family members so that they can buy sweets and toys.

12. Brazil

Another country on our list that serves its main meal on Christmas Eve, is Brazil. The table will be laid with platters of ham and turkey; and in some parts of the country, expect to see fish, too. Instead of the all too familiar roasted potatoes, the meal is usually accompanied with kale, nuts, rice and fruit!

How do you get the stone out of an avocado? You cut open the skin, halve the green body and find a big stone inside. A surprising majority of people use a knife (!) to jab the stone out. Unfortunately, due to the soft nature of the fruit and how slippery the seed is, a jab of the knife can give you a nasty cut, known as “avocado hand”.

Doctors have reported a rise in avocado-related injuries since its surge in popularity in recent years. People grasp the avocado while cutting it instead of using a surface or chopping board, leaving a number of vital tendons and bones in the direct path of the blade should things not go according to plan.

If the knife pushes deep enough through the avocado towards the hand holding it, it can sever the tendons that work the fingers. If the nerves are damaged it can potentially cause permanent loss of movement in part of the hand. Often, tendon injuries will need surgery to repair damage.

Even the rich and famous aren’t immune to “avocado hand”. Meryl Streep turned up to promote the film Hope Springs (2012) in New York sporting a big white bandage. She lost a fight against an avocado and had to have surgery to prevent the injury from causing any further complications.

Another potential hazard associated with “avocado hand” is the vegetable matter itself. Even if the wound isn’t severe enough to warrant a trip to hospital, bits of the avocado could have been pushed into your hand by the blade. This can easily cause infections as it decomposes inside you. As this gets worse, it affects your fingers. Who knew that avocados could cause you to lose the use of certain fingers or even your entire hand?!

Be careful when preparing your instagrammable brunch!

In the UK, a supermarket chain aims to end “avocado hand” once and for all. Marks & Spencer have started selling cocktail avocados. They are about five to eight centimeters long and don’t contain a stone, making them much easier to cut.

Marks & Spencer say that you may not even need to use a knife on them because the skin is soft enough to eat! These new avocados aren’t necessarily the product of some kind of genetic modification—they are simply grown from an unpollinated avocado blossom.

Could it be true? Are aliens actually real? The Department of Defense has officially released three declassified videos showing Navy pilots interacting with “unidentified aerial phenomena.”

On April 27th, 2020, the Department of Defense released an online statement regarding the release of three historical navy videos.  According to the statement, one of the videos was taken in November 2004 and the other two took place in January 2015.

“DOD is releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos. The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as “unidentified.””

Is this proof of aliens?

So basically unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Aliens confirmed? Take a look for yourself. Check out the video below.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the patron saint of millennial representation, put a voice to modern-day fears back in March when she suggested that some young Americans are concerned about having children because of the threat that climate change could post to future generations.

“Our planet is going to hit disaster if we don’t turn this ship around … there’s scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Instagram Live. “And even if you don’t have kids, there are still children here in the world, and we have a moral obligation to leave a better world for them.”

Those thoughts were echoed again this week, this time by Prince Harry in an interview with the renowned anthropologist Jane Goodall. In the conversation for British Vogue, the Duke of Sussex said that he and Meghan would have “two maximum!” when discussing how many children the royal couple planned on having. The question came about when Harry and Goodall were talking about the environmental deterioration of the planet.

A trend

A poll by Business Insider found that nearly 30 percent of Americans agree that a couple should consider the negative and potentially life-threatening effects of climate change when deciding whether or not to have children. The same poll found that roughly 40 percent disagreed with environmental considerations when it comes to family planning, and the remainder of respondents had no opinion.

The study wasn’t perfect, it was conducted over SurveyMonkey Audience by the publication, suggesting that everyone who participated opted in of their own accord. However, it reveals some interesting trends in the thinking about climate change and living a happy life.

Perhaps not surprisingly, it revealed a correlation between age and consideration of the environment. Young people are much more likely to take climate change into account when deciding whether to have children or how many, and older Americans were less likely to agree.

Notably, almost half of respondents older than 60 said the environment should not be a factor in the decision to have kids. Of course, the over-60 population aren’t having any more kids, but are likely pressuring their own children for grandchildren.

It remains to be seen how this current trend in thinking about the population will affect us. A CDC report showed that the birth rate in the US fell to its lowest level in the last 32 years in 2018.

After Harry told Goodall his offspring would be a maximum of two, he said that he always thought the planet was “borrowed,” and that as evolved as humans are supposed to be, “we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation.”

Just spending two hours a week in nature could significantly boost your health and wellbeing, research suggests. It counts even if you’re simply sitting in nature and enjoying the peace.

The physical and mental health benefits of exposure to parks, woods or the beach are nothing new—but this is the first major study into how long is needed to produce an effect on the body. If confirmed by future research, two hours in nature could fall alongside “five a day of fruit and vegetables” and “150 minutes of exercise per week” as official health advice.

The new study is based on interviews with 20,000 people in England about their activity in the previous week. Of those who spent little or no time in nature, a quarter reported poor health and almost half said they were not satisfied with their life, a standard measure of well-being. In contrast, just one-seventh of those who spent at least two hours in nature said their health was poor, while a third were not satisfied with their life.

“What really amazed us was this was true for just about every group we could think of,” said Dr. Mathew White, at the University of Exeter Medical School, who led the study. The benefits of a two-hour dose were the same for both young and old, wealthy and poor, and urban and rural people, he said.

It also applied to those with long-term illnesses and disabilities, White said. “So, getting out in nature seemed to be good for just about everybody. It doesn’t have to be physical exercise—it could be just sitting on a bench.”

The researchers were also surprised that it did not matter whether the two hours in nature were taken in one go or in a series of shorter visits, or whether people went to an urban park, woodlands or the beach.

The study did not attempt to find out why being in nature was so beneficial, but White suggested a sense of tranquillity could be the key: “Most people are under multiple pressures at any given time. So, you go away in a natural setting, it is quiet, it is relaxing and it gives you time to start to process things.”

BRB, we’re putting “spend more time outside” on our summer to-do list now.
